Walk along the Tâmega Ecopista

The Tâmega Line, initially called Caminhos-de-Ferro do Vale do Tâmega, is about 40km long and runs along one of the most beautiful railway lines in the country. Today it is used for pedestrian walks, by bicycle or other non-polluting means and runs from Amarante to Arco de Baúlhe. On this line you will find yourself directly in the surrounding historical and natural heritage, namely the villages and bridges that cross its entire length, the green landscapes, the river Tâmega, the ex-libris of this region, which you can almost always follow closely.

Hitchhiking with the Guigas

Discover the city from another point of view. In Amarante you can either “hitch-hike” or row along the river in boats called Guigas, built 30 years ago by the locksmith José Aguiar. Here you can find another way to visit Amarante and see, from the perspective of the river, a landscape all made of stone.

Monday to Sunday from 9h00 to 17h00 (between June and October)

Kayak

For the more adventurous spirits we suggest a kayak experience. Explore Tâmega and the city of Amarante in a less conventional and more exciting way.

Get to know São Gonçalo Church

Built in 1540, on the orders of D. João III, in the place where it is believed that São Gonçalo was buried, it is one of the most iconic buildings in the city. So that the altar would be above the saint’s tomb, the church was built upside down and the main entrance is on the side. The interior of the church was done in the baroque style, and during the French Invasions it was the shelter of those troops who pillaged and destroyed it. Nowadays the church also hosts some performances of the Orquestra do Norte.
